Another item from the Buick specialists Centerville Auto Repair If you have a point distributor this special lead is needed.. Here is why, the stock starters on GM cars have a S terminal and an R terminal, the S wire energizes the starter, the R wire goes to the positive side of the coil bypassing the ignition resister or resister wiring. This means when the starter is cranking you are getting a full 12 volts to the coil. Electronic ignitions do not use the resister so they already have 12 volts, points need it so they last longer dropping the voltage to about 9 volts. SO, why a special lead? The mini starters only have a S terminal so this lead has a lump in one of the wires, that lump is a diode, a diode is a one way door, it lets the current go to coil without the current coming back to the starter making the starter engage with the ignition in the on position.
